Sistema Bacaeri-Boi Teca
Bacaeri - BoiTeca System
The Bacaeri - BoiTeca System is an ILPF (Integrated Crop-Livestock-Forestry) production system that incorporates teak (Tectona grandis) as an additional income component while maintaining cattle farming as the system's main element. The focus is on sustainable intensification through the expansion of teak cultivation in beef cattle farming areas without replacing one monoculture (pastures) with another (planted forests).
When teak trees are planted in an appropriate arrangement and properly managed (pruning), they have little impact on livestock productivity but continue to provide ecosystem services while contributing to income generation within the integration system. The recommended forage species is Urochloa brizantha (cv Marandu and cv Piatã), and the preferred cattle breed is Nelore.
The system utilizes either single or double-row planting (in an equilateral triangle arrangement) of teak trees intercropped with forage, ensuring that the number of trees at the start is similar to the number at the end of the cycle (clear-cutting). After teak planting, the pasture is restricted and may be left fallow, used for silage or hay production, or renewed conventionally. Alternatively, integration with grain cultivation is possible until the third year, particularly if the pasture is significantly degraded, following the system's recommended practices.
Young cattle (up to approximately 220 kg) are introduced between 10 to 18 months after tree planting, once most trees reach 3 meters in height and 3 to 4 cm in DBH (diameter at breast height). The pasture area occupied by trees remains below 5%, with the primary focus being high-value timber products. The use of superior genetic material (clones) in planting and strict management in tree cultivation are essential to optimizing production quality.
