Antonio Gomes Soares finished his PhD in Food Science from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in 2003. He has been a Senior Researcher of Embrapa Agroindústria de Alimentos for 37 years. Between 1985 and 2018 participated in 20 research projects, and coordinated 14 of these. His research area is Food Science and Technology, with emphasis on Food Quality Assessment and Control and Post-Harvest Technology for Fruits and Vegetables. He was in technical manager for the Food Quality Control Area of Embrapa Agroindústria de Alimentos between 1992 and 1996. He is the technical substitute manager for the Post-Harvest Plant V and the Post-Harvest Physiology and Technology laboratory of Embrapa Agroindústria de Alimentos. He was a co-leader in the development of innovative packaging for fruits and vegetables, financed by the BNDES, where packaging prototypes were developed for mango, papaya, persimmon, strawberry and minimally processed peach palm tree. He developed coating technology for green coconut and transferred to a Petrolina-Pe green coconut farmer that allowed to increase the shelf life up to 40 days and export the green coconut to Europe. He developed the edible coating for minimally processed heart of palm tree, increasing the shelf life up to 21 days. He developed handling technology and installed equipment for selection and classification of fresh persimmon in a farm located in São José do Vale do Rio Preto, RJ, allowing a 110% increase in the sale and profitability of the farmer?s business. He has been giving lectures and technical courses for nutrition, agronomic engineering and chemistry graduate and postgraduate students or technical professionals.
