Creation of Mani Research Network: Scientific and Technological Development of Yuca's Productive Sector
Yuca ( Manihot esculenta) represents one of the main food products of the Northern region. Indigenous peoples have left to the Northern peoples this heritage of many alternatives to the processing of this root, which can generate up to 300 products according to sources. In addition to having great socio-economic importance to the region, it is estimated that the yuca has its origin and diversification center in the Amazon. Thusly, knowing the existing variability in material collected throughout the region is of utmost importance not only for the Northern region, but also to other parts of the world, once this species is also cultivated throughout the American continent, Asia and Africa. The main goal of this project is to create a research network between Northern researchers, while counting with the collaboration of institutions from other regions, in order to generate information regarding Amazonian yuca biodiversity, in addition to generating bioproducts and bioprocesses drawn from the yuca. For such a purpose, the following activities will be held: establishment of in vitro processes to manage and interchange yuca material; generation of processes to obtain tucupi, flower, minimally processed yuca, alcoholic beverages, fuel alcohol and recommendation of varieties. The project also aims to contribute to the training of human resources throughout the region, by supporting institutions of education and post-graduation, in addition to the formation of post-doctors./n
